Skill parcels

One of the problems I have with EP is the allotment of skills. Rather than struggle with a 1000+ points, I thought it would be a handy feature to create skill parcels. Each parcel should be listed with a point cost like 100-, 250-, 300-point skill parcels.

This would be something like Secrets of Zi'ran where bunches of skills are assembled into units detailing different skill sets from:
Regular sets like a operating mercenary.
Alternate or mixed origins like a Jovian spyware infomorph.
Strange transhuman culture like a Scum philanthropist-for-hire.
Specific past or current occupations like "I've been murdering professionally since 0AF."
Specialised training like "I learned to ride giant machine crabs while piloting a colony of cyborg cockroaches when I had to do repair damage to Barsoom bubble exteriors."

I imagine the set-point parcels will generate all sorts of weird combos and results like:
Mechahacker - mechanical morph jury rigger.
Scrap Kludger - building working machines out of disparate parts.
Meshrigger - clapped-together pirate hard and software merchant.
Infosurgery - informorph software editing.
Orbital Diving Survivor Retrival Spec - specilised rapid dominance HALO jumper to rescue survivors or clear areas.
Vack Limpet - Ad hoc ship security hobos and cling-on stowaways.

I'm going to go home and work out a couple. I hope some of you will join in having some fun helping out.

Cheers,

Chris.

GURPs also has something very similar in the form of racial packages. I'm all for this idea as a short cut for character generation! Do you want to add them to the wiki?

Indeed that does sound like a good idea. I might try to work up some myself later on.

Hmm... Ok this idea might not actually be do-able for quick PC generation, as attributes affect skill cost so that there is no way of knowing a skill's cost w/o knowing the attribute cost. Yes you could list the adjusted costs but for a package of skills dependent on several attributes you'd be nearly better off just taking each skill independantly.

That said the idea could be used for inspirational purposes to give Players an idea of what a character might look like by giving an outline as to how high skills would be for a given idea.

Looking through the system it really isn't optimized for speed and about the only way you're gonna speed things up is to give PCs mostly-pregened characters and let them customize.

You just need little + signs prefixing the attributes, skills and customised adjustments. All it needs is a CP total cost (are knowing initial attributes that important considering the average of 15 through all seven).

Indeed, I think this would a cool wiki feature.

Yes but that average 15 is just the average off all seven and the minimum that characters are likely to have.

The real problem comes into when you want a character parcel to have professional or PHD level skills, which I think will come up quite often.

While I think the idea would be great for building outlines so players can see what skills they might want for a type of PC; I don't think the parcel idea would be useful for creating quick-gen characters.

Re: Skill parcels

Hold on, there is nothing saying you can't create a parcel with a energy weapon skill of 70%; just remember that many parcels will overlap and so a player could take three different weapon, soldier and combat specialist parcels and accumulate their energy weapon skill to 65%.

I do assume that every player would fiddle with their characters after they build them -- especially is a skill is sitting in the 120s. It's less problem subtracting 40% off Networking: Jovian and putting it across three other lower skills.

The idea of parcels is they are pregenerated lifepath chunks instead of wholecloth characters.
